If you want the features of a traditional longboard that is as portable as a textbook and carves like a Penny board, you want to take your board surfing across campus, or you just want a new spin on the old-school cruiser deck, this year has something for you.
I’m sitting on a bench in the middle of University of New Mexico’s campus in Albuquerque, which due to the weather (or lack thereof!) is a longboarding hotspot.
There are people cruising around everywhere I go in this city and it seems they all congregate right here. This year the classic board makes way for 3 new rides that have students here hanging up their old longboards.
Whether you want all the features of a traditional board that is as portable as a textbook and carves like a Penny board, you want to take your longboard surfing across campus, or you just want a new spin on the old-school cruiser deck, this year has something new for you.
The Mini-Longboard is quickly becoming the most popular board on campus here at UNM. A short (19”) pintail deck sitting on full size, 7” reverse kingpin trucks, and 69mm wheels loaded with Abec-9 bearings, it will send you soaring over rough roads and cracked sidewalks. With a 12” wheelbase, a sharp nose and tail, and the large, gripping wheels, you can carve as tight as a Penny board with the comfort and stability of wide deck.
Its small size makes it easy to carry and if fits right inside of most backpacks. It is handmade in the USA by Eggboards solely from durable 4-ply bamboo, one of the strongest woods around and the earth’s number one natural resource, making this mini-cruiser skateboard the most eco-friendly choice in my list. The Eggboard comes in at $109 meaning this is also the most affordable for a college budget.
The Ultra Longboard
Now you can truly surf the streets with this full-sized longboard surfboard by Hamboards. These one of a kind creations come as long as six and a half feet, designed after real surfboards, designed to make you really feel like you are surfing a wave. They are made from birch or bamboo and come beautifully hand painted.
The Hamboards come with their own line of trucks, bearing, and massive 97mm wheels. It is extremely fast and there aren’t many things that these monster wheels can’t ride over with ease but it can’t turn as sharp as the Eggboard and at 32 pounds this board may not be the best for taking to class. The Hamboards “Classic” deck comes in at $549.
The Clear Longboard
Finally, a skateboard you can get wet! They are completely clear and made from heavy-duty acrylic, it feels like flying to watch the ground pass beneath your feet as you carve down hills on this one of a kind ride.
It makes for a great photo opportunity day or night; the wheels light up in a striking spectacle you can’t experience with any other skateboard. The boards are handmade in Utah and come in several styles with prices beginning at $140.
So quit riding around on your dirty old longboards this year and try one of these new skateboards that are revolutionizing how riders are cruising across the country.
